Internal staff members with a doctorate can supervise Master's theses to a limited extent after consultation with the respective head of department.
Announcement of the topic
The form must be completed by the student and signed by the supervisor and submitted to Ms. Sabine Habersack in the office or by e-mail. After registration at the institute, the form is forwarded to the URBI Dean's Office. There it will be approved by the Dean of Studies.
Formal guidelines for the Master's thesis and abstract
Layout
- Selectable font
- Select a font size that corresponds approximately to Times New Roman 12 pt. or Arial 11 pt.
- Line spacing: 1.5 lines
- Justified with hyphenation
- Page margins: 2-3 cm, a little more on the left because of the binding
- Page numbering: bottom right; title page not numbered

- The abstract must be uploaded separately to UniGrazOnline and is not part of the finished Master's thesis.
Master'stheses can also be written in English. If students intend to write their Master's theses in English, they must indicate this in the registration form for the topic.
The recommendations of the Federal Government on "Gender-equitable language use" must be observed ("Gender-equitable formulation" of the BM:BKK)
Assessment of the Master's thesis
The Master's thesis is graded by the respective supervisor on the basis of a written assessment (comprehensible written justification).
In order to guarantee a comprehensible and approximately objective assessment of the Master's theses, the assessors use the following criteria, among others, for the assessment or it was agreed to formally emphasize the assessment based on these criteria more strongly:
- Structure of the thesis; clarity of the problem, formulation of the question(s);
- Introduction of the basic concepts; knowledge and presentation of the relevant specialist literature;
- Justification and presentation of the method; comprehensibility of the evaluation steps and the interpretation of the results;
- Compliance with citation rules; quality of the summary and quality of the abstract.
Abstract
This is a short summary in German and English (max. 2000 characters incl. spaces) in which the following questions are answered briefly and concisely:
- Why was the present study conducted?
- What was the aim of the study?
- How was the study conducted?
- What result(s) did the study produce?
Steps to the Master's degree
Deadline for the completion of Master's studies
Before submitting the completed Master's thesis, the examination transcript, the transcript of record from the Master's degree program and notifications, as well as the confirmation of practical experience must be submitted by email to Ms. Seiser. Further information on applying for the degree.
The completed Master's thesis can then be submitted in UniGrazOnline no later than 8 calendar weeks before the planned date for the board examination. Please also note the instructions for creating a PDF-A compliant file:Instructions for submitting the thesis in UniGrazOnline
The assessor has 8 weeks to assess the thesis.
Second examiner for the Master's examination:
After uploading the Master's thesis via UGO, you can arrange the second examiner exclusively with Ms. Seiser, by e-mail or in person.
With the written confirmation from Ms. Seiser, you can arrange the literature with the assigned examiner.
Registration for the board examination takes place after Ms. Seiser has received a positive report on the Master's thesis.
Examination dates are scheduled for the following months: October, November, January, March, April, end of June.

Submission of the Master's thesis
Due to the change in the statutes of the study regulations, theses must only be submitted electronically from 1.10.2022. Your supervisor can also request a printout of your Master's thesis. This printout must be submitted directly to your supervisor.
- The organization, degree program and year of publication must be entered (save) on the business card under Theses / New Thesis;
- The title of the thesis may not be changed independently! An abstract and keywords must be entered (save); the abstracts may have a maximum of 2000 characters.
- After entering the abstracts and completing all mandatory fields, click on "Submit now"; your supervisor will automatically be informed by e-mail that the full text and the abstracts are online and ready for release.
- You can find detailed instructions on how to enter them here and in the "Theses" application under "Help". All mandatory fields (see "Formal requirements not fulfilled") must be completed! Registration for the Master's examination and examination dates
Master's examination by committee
In the Master's degree programs "Social Pedagogy" and "Adult andContinuing Education", the subject to which the Master's thesis is assigned and another subject of educational science are the subject of the oral Master's examination.
Students can choose from subjects such as General Education, Elementary Education, Inclusive Education, Social Pedagogy, Comparative Education, Adult and Continuing Education.
In the Master's degree program inInclusive Education, the compulsory modules specific to the Master's degree program in Inclusive Education and the compulsory electives in General Education/Social Pedagogy are the subject of the board-based Master's examination.

Assignment of the examiner for the second examination subject:
After submitting the bound Master's thesis to the URBI Dean's Office, you agree on the second examiner and the chosen subject exclusively with Ms. Seiser at the Institute. With the written confirmation from Ms. Seiser, you can arrange the literature with the assigned examiner.
You can register for the Master's examination by board examination with Ms. Elisabeth Seiser using the form after you have received the report for your Master's thesis.
