The Sovereign‘s Two Bodies: Gender and the Performance of Political Continuity on the Radical Right

Women leaders of the European radical right claim both the decisive authority coded masculine and the caring, reproductive authority coded feminine. This lecture argues that this doubling performs an apparent solution to an old problem in sovereignty: how does power outlast the bodies holding it? The modern nation-state answered it with gendered bodies, men’s as soldiers, women’s as reproducers of the nation - a bargain the right has long invested in. What does it mean for one leader to embody both "halves", and what does this reveal about gender and sovereignty today?
Die Ringvorlesung wird im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes [FraMe] durchgeführt und bündelt die Perspektiven verschiedener Disziplinen auf die mediale Inszenierung von Weiblichkeit durch die extreme Rechte im Wandel der Zeit.
